RSCS Interviewed by the San Diego Examiner on the SONGS Units 2 & 3 Decommissioning Options
Posted on December 27th, 2013

In the past year, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) decided to shut down units 2 and 3 of this power plant as required upgrades were determined to be cost prohibitive.  The final decommissioning plans for these reactors have yet to be finalized.

To fully understand the disposition options under consideration for SONGS units 2 and 3, the San Diego Examiner recently interviewed Jay Tarzia for more information on the decommissioning, safestore and entombment processes that have been employed at other sites.  This article provides context on the roles that the NRC, stake holders and the general public play in the decommissioning of a nuclear plant.  It also reports on the radioactive waste disposal options available for plants undergoing decommissioning efforts.
