Research and Development

RSCS assists academic and R&D facilities in developing and implementing radiation protection programs and manages license termination plans and D&D efforts. Recognized for our expertise in Health Physics and operational radiation safety, our staff will ensure that your facilities programs operate within regulatory limits. In addition, we offer complex radiation shielding, activation, and criticality evaluations using the state of the art Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) transport code.

Accomplishments include

  • Washington University Medical Center
    RSCS has provided shielding evaluations and nuclide activation calculation services to verify the shielding design for installation of a cyclotron facility at Washington University Medical Center (WUMC). Calculations were based on NCRP 144 methodology and used Monte-Carlo simulation analysis to determine dose rates from collisions of 19 MeV protons with materials impacted by the beam.

  • EPRI Radiation Dose to HDPE Piping
    RSCS evaluated the radiation impact on high density polyethylene (HDPE) piping for use in Nuclear Power Plant applications using MCNP. This work was intended to provide guidance on the applicability of HDPE piping in radioactive environments and an expectation of service life in these conditions.

    MARSSIM final status surveys of facilities
